At least a decade ago, perhaps two, a series of advertisements for Castrol GTX oil was shown on television. The setting was somewhere in the Kalahari, very dry, hot, and remote. The characters, in the later ads, were called “Boet” and “Swaer”. Quite funny. (You can watch at least one of them at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayoz5jEyuXo) The very first ad in this series featured a girl (if I remember correctly) who drives up to the local petrol station in a bakkie and says “Hot today, hey Hennie?” I’m not sure many people remember this, but in my mind it has turned into a catch phrase for hot days. Well, not too surprising I guess.
Today was hot. Not boiling hot — it has been hotter this summer. But nice and warm and this evening is windless but cool, a perfect summer’s evening. The week is done, and somehow the to-do list has just grown longer and longer. Single-tasking is hard enough; multi-tasking is impossible. But at least I’ve made a little progress with my research and there are prospects ahead. This weekend will be devoted to paper-writing, and a draft funding proposal if I can fit it in. I was going to work on the departmental website, but that will have to wait until next week. Priorities.
